SG-2440 docs are unclear on what cable is needed for console access (windows)

The console port on SG-2440 is mini-b usb, so is a mini-b to usb-a (pc end) cable sufficient?

I am not sure a regular usb cable linked above can do that. If it can, how? If not, what is needed?

That cable is fine. One from somebody's old phone is fine. The serial chip is on the SG-2440, you are just connecting it to your PC. Grab an old cable and download putty, the docs are pretty straightforward. If your box is toast, you are going to need to load up a usb stick with the ADI installer and reload the box.

Yes, it's a standard USB to USB-mini cable as supplied with many things. Though recent devices tend to moved to USB-micro.
There should have been a cable included with the firewall if it was bought recently.

from the Connecting to the serial console
The default serial console settings in pfSense 2.2 and later are 115200/8/N/1, meaning:- Speed: 115200
- Data Bits: 8
- Parity Bits: None
- Stop Bits: 1
Must be set into the Putty or TerraTerm or any other terminal program too! In pfSense is it the default setting.
