Upgrading pfsense rig
-
Im considering upgrading my pfsense rig to a new pc, can I just move the pfsense harddrive to the new 64bit rig without having to reinstall ?

I have done this in the past. Works well if, for instance your old box has all intel NICs and your new one does also.
so all em0, em1 etc.
I have upgraded some with a collection of various NICs and all I had to do was go to my pfsense console and set up the interfaces again.
If your install isn't too complex, it should work.
However, my advice - Just do a fresh reinstall. More reliable probably.

What's so hard about doing a reinstall and then importing your config via Diagnostics - Backup/Restore? I'd rather do that than take an installed instance and try to slap it on different hardware.

Now I have a second problem.
My old rig is an amd64bit, and my new rig is intel64bit.
This is a retarded question, but am I limited to the 32bit i386 pfsense installation if I have an intel 64bit mobo/cpu, or can I use the amd64 installation file if I want the 64bit installation?

"amd64" means for "64 Bits" platform (either AMD or Intel) ;)

Its the name amd64 thats retarded. Not you.

Blame Intel for using AMD's specifications for a change. :-)
