2.4.1 on FW7551 Netgate Hardware Failed
-
I attempted to update to the latest 2.4 version using the GUI and it failed with the message "Update Failed". Went and looked at the logs and did not find anything revealing. So I went back to the update view in the GUI and in the log area it was downloading stuff. So I waited until it finished and rebooted, but all was not well. The logs had a bunch of errors, which I did not capture.
The firewall was partially running, but it indicated 2.3.4 and not the updated version of 2.4.x. I ended up rebooting a couple of times, but there were errors about no packages, and it was giving mostly errors on the LAN, WAN, and DMZ. I though oh well, I have the 2.4 memstick so I'll just do a full install. That did not work well at all.
It refused to install specifically to recognize the memory sticks, and everything was a mess. Tried different memory sticks, etc. to no avail. It would not boot the internal drive.
Long story short I went back to the 2.3.5 memstick install and got the firewall back. Reloaded the configuration and all is apparently well.
Now I see the notes about the GPT boot issues.
What I want to know is if I managed to get 2.4.2 installed on my Netgate hardware will it fail every time I try the GUI update or should I just stick with 2.3.x?
I bought Netgate hardware to avoid these problems. Now I understand this firewall is EOL, but I still did not think you just dropped all thoughts about the hardware after EOL. That seems a awful short period of time for a firewall. And I kinda expected with all of the marketing hoopla about buying Netgate hardware that at least the GUI would say, Hey, don't try this.
I bought this firewall exactly 3 years ago. It shipped December 2, 2014.

I have a 7551 here and once you install it with the correct options, it will upgrade OK after that. The disk layout and filesystem isn't changed by an upgrade.
-
Then I am right to assume that it will not upgrade correctly using the GUI?
-
You can upgrade from 2.3.x to 2.4, from 2.4.0 to 2.4.2, etc. It upgrade just fine.
The only problem with the 7551 is installing 2.4.x fresh, but if you follow the note on the wiki you can install 2.4.x and it will continue to run and upgrade fine after you install it.

Are you implying here that I should first upgrade from 2.3.5 to 2.4.0, then upgrade from 2.4.0 to 2.4.2. Or that I should be fine upgrading from any version to 2.4.2 directly using the GUI? Because when I tried to use the GUI it failed miserably.
And thanks for the quick response.

I'm saying that, barring any problems unrelated to the 7551, any upgrade will work on it. In other words: If the upgrade failed, it wasn't because it was run on a 7551.
The only specific failure that affects the 7551 is a fresh installation of 2.4.x, which can be worked around as mentioned in the wiki.
So if your upgrade failed, post about that instead with more detail because it doesn't have anything to do with the hardware.
