Traffic shaping for ADSL at 8160Kbps/384Kbps
-
Hi,
I've been trying to find an example of someone shaping this sort of connection without luck.
The specs for my (ADSL1) connection are:Connected : Down Stream : 8160Kbps / Up Stream : 384Kbps
Mode Up Speed Down Speed SNR Margin Loop Att.
G.dmt Annex A 384000 8160000 11 8I have only this WAN link and the LAN which is 10GBE fibre. pfSense is running inside an ESXi Vmware vm.
All I really want is to prioritise VOIP, Alexa voice digital assistants, web browsing, Sonos streaming, youtube, usenet downloads, torrents, etc so that interactive services always have enough bandwidth to function when being used. At the moment if someone starts a download or sends an email with a few photos attached I can say goodbye to the internet until it completes.. NOTHING works.
Any specific or general guidance specific to configuring pfSense for this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.Regards,
Michal

Bandwidth vs latency. Lack of bandwidth may be the root cause, but the direct cause is too much latency. Look into the fq_codel https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=126637.0discussion.
One thing you'll need to do is tweak both the quantum (about 300) and the target (1.5xMTU/bandwidth, or about 65-70ms in your case).

Thanks for taking the time to respond!
That looks VERY promising, but FAR beyond my ability to sink the time into.
I'm only new to pfSense and even just the basics are proving tough (ie VPN's of any sort .. yet to get one working).
Maybe once there is a web UI I can give it a go. Has there been any word on that being implemented?
I tried the wizard available in pfSense and as far as I can tell it hasn't had any effect.

Michal
