Sophos UTM vs pfSense for web filtering.

I have a customer who recently purchased a Sophos UTM ($$$) as a transparent web filtering appliance for a school (CIPA).
It works great, its fast, easy to use, etc. It's just really expensive for what it is…
I would like to setup a transparent HTTP/S web filter for the school using pfSense and other open source packages. I've read about diladele and its very inexpensive!
How feasible is this? The Sophos box does transparent HTTPS filtering, not sure how its performing this black magic, but it works.
