General Setup with Home Router
-
Hi Guys ,
New to the Pfsense and were after some advice
i have uploaded a quick and dirty drawing of my current setup
I have a home router (DHCP Enabled / WIFI Disabled ) which connects to the internet which has 4 network ports on the back of .
I have a rj45 cable plugged into a AP (Ubiquity AP) and another rj45 cable running to a switch out the back which has a NAS server / Desktop PC and 2 x PS4 connected all by rj45 cables.
The WIFI AP i have setup with two SSID - Kids and Adults and has DHCP enabled on this .
i want to slip in a Pfsense box into the equation but have no idea in where to place it .
the goal of the PF box is to filter and cache content (So Squid with Squid guard and all that )
–---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now would you recommend i disable DHCP on the home router and connect the pfsense to one of the four ports on the back
the PFsense box has two ethernet ports .
so one for wan plugged into the router and 1 for the lan which will be plugged into the switch which i then run the ap and the desktop / ps4 /nas off ?
yea or nay ?
am i able to turn dhcp on the lan interface ?
anyhelp be great

Do you need to keep your existing router to get Internet ?
If you do then I would suggest you keep that router in bridge mode by disabling DHCP get the ethernet to pfsense and set pfsense as your router. You will need to enable DHCP in pfsense LAN. Depending on how many physical interface you have you can connect your switch as LAN and your your AP as another interface.
If you do not need to keep your existing router connect your cable to pfsense directly and it will act as your router. And other is same as above.

Thats the way to go in probably 98% of the cases like yours
