Hi all, I’m considering buying this router and setting up pfsense on it to run PIA open vpn. Just wondering what you guys think of it as I’ve never done it before?  Thanks

I guess I should also add, I want it to be a secondary router. This way when I want to connect to the vpn I can connect to it and if not I can connect to my Isp gateway. I know that the router I posted a link to supports AES-NI, which is good from what I know, but I’m not really sure what my bottleneck will be running open VPN with pfsense.  Another question I have is if I install a wifi card or dongle, will that work as a wireless access point the way a store bought router would, or are those only for pc’s and I’ll need another sort of component designed for a router?  Thanks

If you want to leave it on 24x7 don't get that one, you'll need a larger heatsink.

Well I’d like to keep it as cheap as possible, while still having as much power as possible with at least 4 lan ports and wifi. Can you recommend any?  Right now my internet line is 120mbps so I would want it be be able to get at lest those speeds with open VPN, but future proofing it some for when I upgrade my internet speeds down the line I’d a bonus. Thanks

You could try it and if it gets too hot, add a big slow running USB-powered fan. Or get a box with bigger heatsink, like: https://aliexpress.com/item/Dual-Core-Mini-PC-Barebone-4-Ethernet-Lan-Nano-Itx-Core-i5-5250U-Pfsense-Firewall-Mini/32800603727.html?spm=2114.48010108.5.4.2b7b7ea31wtUeN&&scm=1007.12783.72505.0 (qotom Q3554G4 i3)

If you have 100 more to spend, you could check out the SG-3100, but it might not be as fast as an i3 or E/J/C-series Atom.

But the SG-3100 doesn’t support AES-NI does it?

Nope, but it probably has some ARM version of that. AES-NI is an Intel thing, AMD has some different brand of AES acceleration. Most ARM SoCs have a bunch of vendor-specific devices, hopefully with some generic interface to use them. For the SG stuff, NetGate probably made sure it works with pfSense before selling it ;-)

build a custom box. no china junk, or limited netgate products.

itx ryzen 2200g (onboard video), dual intel lan, 8 gb, ssd

Ryzen is a bad choice and China isn't junk. 8GB is overkill.

I just bought two of these (minisys) and the build quality is in my opinion excellent.
The do however get hot, mine are idling at 55c with more or less 0 load.

this is the route i would go: https://store.netgate.com/MBT-4220-system.aspx

does AES, intel has a fan to keep it coool  you just need a simple switch

FYI.  i have a SG 2220 with a 120Mb connection at nearly full speeds and it never goes above 46 degrees C

                            HIGHLY recommend netgate products.
