      The C3xxx series is not ready for prime time and pfSense yet. The network drivers for it are not even in pfSense yet as far as I know, and only in the very latest FreeBSD versions. On top of that, it's really not broadly tested.

      Don't get a C3xxx based system just yet.

        1u boxes will be noisy by design regardless of what cpu you throw in there.  Small fans=whinny.  Rule of thumbs is, to provide the same air flow, slower turning larger fans quieter.

        I offer this fanless design, the cpu is coupled directly to the case which is a big heatshink, https://www.amazon.com/Firewall-Appliance-Gigabit-Celeron-Barebone/dp/B0741F634J/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1520084806&sr=8-6&keywords=micro+firewall+aes-ni&dpID=51Uuig3Dx1L&preST=SX300_QL70&dpSrc=srch.  They may have a version with Atom in it.

          Don't get that one, it's a rebadged minisys with an extra 100 slapped on the price.

            Ya, but got a more hefty heatsink than old minisys which should do decent in the quiet/heat department if that's OP's priority.

              No, it is literally a minisys. Protectli just buys minisys. Minisys is an ODM.

                @mricecool:

                But what about PSU? Im not interested in pico PSU, is there any other 1u PSU that are quite?

                It's hard to say, since you threw out one common suggestion without any explanation.

                I don't like the big bulky transformator on the cable :/

                  Aha alright, the NIC isn't yet supported. Good to know!

                  But how about the performance Atom vs my current setup?

                    Yes, the new C/J type Atoms are 10x faster.

                      Well, then, you've painted yourself into a corner. if you had a bigger case you could get a variable fan power supply that would be silent with a low power board like the atom. If you use the picopsu you put the heat-generating part of the PSU external and avoid the fan entirely. With a 1U you get a tiny fan that has to run at high RPM and I don't know anything retail that's silent. (There are some OEM 1U cases with fanless power supplies, but they're mated to specific boards so they're not worried about pulling too much power. Retail 1u PSUs are hard to find under 200W.) Your best bet is to find the lowest-power model you can find with variable speed fans. Whether that's "quiet enough" is purely subjective. Or pick a different case or change one of your other constraints.

                        Me either but 1u built-in PSU tend to have those small whinny fans, so u pick, noise or external power brick?

                        I've seen fanless designs, but don't even mention a budget.
