SMART Error: Unknown USB bridge
-
Hi,
I've recently installed pfSense onto a new usb drive and everything appears to be working fine. However, Ive noticed the SMART status is now "Unknown" and upon running any SMART tests I receive the following error…
smartctl 6.4 2015-06-04 r4109 [FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE-p24 amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-15, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org/dev/da0: Unknown USB bridge [0x0781:0x5583 (0x100)] Please specify device type with the -d option.
Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary
–-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The USB drive in question is a "SanDisk 16GB Cruzer Ultra Fit" (USB 3.0)
I can only assume this usb device is currently unsupported as its a new product from SanDisk. If that's the case would it be silly to wait and see if the next pfSense update supports this device?

Hi,
You have to specify the type of device you are using. If -d test doesn't work, try some values (https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=smartctl&apropos=0&sektion=8&manpath=FreeBSD+10.1-RELEASE+and+Ports&arch=amd64&format=html), but my SanDisk is found with "-d scsi".
smartctl -a -d scsi /dev/da0

Do you have the same USB disk as me?

@johnkeates:
USB flash disks rarely have useful smart data, just ignore it.
Is that a fact? Or simply your opinion? Sweeping statements like that can be dangerous for people that don't know any better.
