I have an XTM505 Firebox with the latest nanoBSD of pfsense. One interface is configured as WAN, connects to BT Infinity via their HUAWEI Openreach VDSL modem. In PfSense the interface is setup as PPPoE, username and password, and IP as DHCP from the ISP.

Normally all is OK, but sometimes the WAN on Pfsense goes down. It doesnt matter how quiet the traffic is, this morning it went down on idle at 7am.

What happens is, the BT modem reports all green lights, but rebooting the firebox fixes the issue. Is there a way to avoid having to reboot firebox?

What should my MTU be? I think currently its set to Auto.
How can I determine if its an ISP issue or my setup issue.
What can I do to reduce this happening?

This situation isnt helping the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).

      Many Thanks.
