Is 256MB CF still enough?

I have aquired a nice NEO box with a VIA C7 Processor 1000MHz, 4 nic's and a 256MB CF.
(Got it for free: Take this, but you must also take this junk to the scrapyard)

It say "unable to check for updates"On https://updates.pfsense.org/_updaters there are only 1,2 and 4GB nanobsd, and 1GB is from 2015; should I get a 4G CF?
A Micro-SD to CF adapter is almost as expensive as a CF, so I guess that is not a route to take.

….but since you got it for free. That is about the same spec as an ALIX which does still run.
It should run a 2.3.5 NanoBSD (or 2.3.6 dev snapshot) image but you will have to invest in a new CF card as you found. 2GB minimum.
Or use some other boot media that might work in that device with whatever you have already.
Keep in mind that 256MB is the absolute minimum required RAM. You won't be able to run any packages. You will have to be careful enabling but in features.

I see there is a memstick-version, and the device boots into a debian install from USB, so I'll try to use the memstick version.

The memstick image is for installing to something else from a memstick.
You can also write a Nano image to a USB memstick and boot and run from that directly.

Yeah, I found out. I downloaded the memstick on a 4GB usb, and used it to install on an 8GB usb ;-)
The interface is rather slow, but I hope it will affect the routing speed. I'm on 4G wireless now, but will be getting fibre in 3 months.

You definitely won't be pushing 1Gbps with that if that's the fibre you are getting. Does it have gigabit NICs even?
Upgrading the RAM to just 512MB would make a significant difference to general gui performance there. Most people are probably throwing away those DIMMs now. ;)

I probably just start the fibre with 100Mb.
The ram usage is 23% of 462 MiB (/var and /tmp in ram)

23%The box have 4 1Gb ports.
Currently I'm using it for using 2 4GB modems from two different providers, to get failover.
I'm probably not going bananas with rules; I'm on CGNAT, so not much danger of incoming traffic ;-) -
Ah, so you actually have 512MB RAM already?
That looks OK then. Maybe run some throughput tests, see what you can get through it.
