Setup virgin media router as gateway

So apologies on the probably obvious question, feel free to point me to other posts, but we are getting virgin media installed and removing bt broadband, the BT uses a standard IP 192.168.0.0 range with its own internal, from what i can tell the new virgin one will have its own separate ip when its in what they call "modem mode" of 192.168.100.1 so to replace the gateway in my pf sense is it as simple as changing the wan gateway or does the wan gateway NIC ip have to be the same range as well.
I currently use 192.168.0.252 for the wan pointing to the gateway 0.254do i leave it as 0.252 or change it to 100.2?

If it's a real 'modem mode' it should give you a public IP address on the WAN interface, probably via DHCP.
Then if you wish to access the device itself on 192.168.100.1 you would add a virtual IP on your WAN in that subnet. That would be optional though.
Virgin have supplied a number of devices with different capabilities, we will probably need to know exactly what you have and how it's configured to give more detailed advice.

Many wireless services don't provide public addresses at all, as they don't have any to hand out. IPv4 has nowhere near enough addresses to go around. In fact there are more mobile devices than IPv4 addresses. This is why we should move to IPv6 as quickly as possible.

That's true, but Virgin Media (in the UK) is a cable provider and I'm pretty sure they are not using CGN. Not yet at least. ;)

I'm on Rogers, in Canada. While I have a public IPv4 address on my cable modem, I don't get one on my cell phone. However, on IPv6, both the phone and tethered devices get public IPv6 addresses. I have also set up business customers that have a wireless connection for backup to their main Internet connection. Those have NAT addresses too.

I'm on Virgin in the UK and can confirm, with the SuperHub in modem mode, you'll get a Public IP address on the WAN interface on PfSense. The 192.168.100.1 address can also be used to look at the modem stats and to toggle modem mode back off again should you wish.
