I upgraded to 2.3.5 from 2.3.1 successfully in order to upgrade to 2.4.x and update showed 2.4.3 available
I then selected upgrade to 2.4.3 and it said it had been successful but now GUI shows:

      2.3.5-RELEASE-p2 (amd64)
built on Thu May 10 15:03:32 CDT 2018
      FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE-p10

The system is on a later version than official release.

      and update shows:

      Current Base System: 2.3.5_2
      Latest Base System: Warning:
      Status: Running a newer version.

Branch is set to latest Stable version (2.4.x)

      What to do please.

      Thanks

      Colin

What shows up if you attempt to run pfSense-upgrade -d from the console or ssh?

What if you try switching the update branch to 2.4.4 snapshots, then check for updates, then switch it back to 2.4.x stable and check again?

In my case this was linked to my previous post - https://forum.netgate.com/topic/131667/upgrade-2-3-5-to-2-4-3-crash-report/55 ... crash report - which @jimp tried to help me sort out.
I eventually had to load a new image and restore my config.
