Pfsense vs opensense
-
Hi all,
As pfsense is now owned by netgate the founders of pfsense have made a new firewall called opensense
I have heard the new version of pfsense v2.5 (not even out yet) requires a beefy cpu to run it
Just wondering is it time to transition to opensense
Cheers,

What?? Seriously?
Disclaimer.. Read my signature.
No "the founders of pfsense have not made a new firewall called anything else with the "sense" name.. That would get a ride through the legal system.
************************edited out. Some others (cough cough thieves cough) have forked pfsense (without leaving copyrights in place and violating trademarks) and come up with a something that to me seems to be about half way there.
No the CPU wont have to be Beefy by standards. Just AES-NI will be needed. Im not able to find any recent CPU that wont work. This seems to bug others that can't steal.. oops I mean fork their code for their own.
I have several boxes that are not so beefy and do AES-NI just fine. HP Thinclients. Very cheap on Ebay.
Just my Honest Opinion. I have several boxes that will be on 2.4 till after they quit due to old age and pfsense will still be updating them at that point.

And no. The original founders have nothing in common with them.
https://www.netgate.com/blog/moving-forward.html No he did not go to Openscents (sp)
https://threema.ch/en and isnt this???
I tried to give a little help over there at one point. During that time the admins made one of their users emails public in the forum after he asked them a very legitimate question they didn't like. I was done after that.
There you go- Full disclosure from me.

Thanks chpalmer

Where did you come up with that nonsense?
A long time ago pfSense was forked by Scott Ullrich and Chris Buechler from m0n0wall, originally developed by Manuel Kasper.
Now Scott has his daytime job with an ad agency and makes music in the evenings while Chris is at Ubiquity.Funny that chpalmer mentions Threema. That's the new company from m0n0wall founder Manuel Kasper.
AFAIK, none of them does anything with a FreeBSD based firewall now, let alone a fork of pfSense.

Ask netgate but we hope so.

Now Scott has his daytime job with an ad agency and makes music in the evenings while Chris is at Ubiquity. To be clear, Scott left in 2012, though he had been inactive for a couple years before that. Chris left in 2016. In the beginning Scott was the main developer.
Netgate began directly supporting the pfSense project in 2006 with actual cash every month, from 2006 until well after the acquisition in 2012.
By 2012, the project was floundering as it was well behind the current version of FreeBSD.
Since 2012, Netgate has incurred nearly all the development costs for pfSense by directly employing several software engineers who work on pfSense full-time, as well as IT people who make sure the backend systems stay together, and all the rest that entails.
Funny that chpalmer mentions Threema. That's the new company from m0n0wall founder Manuel Kasper.

Yes. (I don’t know how many times I’ll have to repeat this.)

Been w/ pfSense since v2 went into beta. Sometimes I think I misunderstand this latest pfSense universe.
This thread helps a bit.
