Losing access to router yet it still functions
-
I am having an odd issue with my pfSense router that I have noticed for the past week or so. Occasionally, I lose the ability to log in to the control interface. This isn't a completely foreign issue, as I do recall a year or so ago, this happened several times, but the new issue is I can no longer access it via SSH or directly from an attached monitor and keyboard. I again would not be too terribly surprised that in this situation, I would lose Internet access but surprisingly I can still reach websites during this period of time. I did find that when I lost access via SSH and through a directly attached keyboard and monitor, I also lost the ability to VPN into my system. I am using this for my home network and when I'm away from my house, I VPN using OpenVPN to tunnel all my traffic through my home network. This lock-up occurred once this last week and I was thankfully able to walk my wife through the process of rebooting the device over the telephone. It has happened twice since then. Considering there has not been a new update in a while, I find this to be odd and curious if anyone had seen this happen or if anyone has any idea as to where to point the finger.

What hardware are you using?
If you connect directly to the console when this happens you see nothing at all? Is there any output from
Ctl+t
?Steve

My hardware is a Jetway NF9HG-2930 motherboard with a 250 GB Samsung 850 EVO drive with 8 GB of RAM.
Directly from a console, I see the basic screen, asking me to enter an "Option:" number. If I were to hit "8" for Shell, it blanks the line and sits there doing nothing at all.

Were you able to try
Ctl+t
there? If you shutdown the firewall from normal running conditions does it shutdown and power off as expected?
You might also run some tests on the boot drive. If that fails it can appear like that. Running processes continue to function but nothing can be started or logged. I would expect to see errors on the console though in that situation.
