      hello all,

      I have a question: i own a watchguard firebox x6500e with pfsense 2.1 installed,

Is this config still safe to use?

I have it running in a lab environment right now and want to use it for my home network as a router / firewall for the time being (in the near future am looking to upgrade to a more suitable solution / box, but for now it would be a terrific steppingstool)

I am coming off a m0n0wall router / firewall that (as we speak) in still in service and perfoms great to (almost) all my networking needs

      Thx in advance ;)

I wouldn't use it as is. Is there some specific reason you can't upgrade it to 2.4.3?

Well, last time i used it i tried to upgrade it and it crashed... the guy that sold me the unit said that this was the latest version of pfsense i could run without problems.... so i just took his word on that and never tried it

It won't go to 2.4 as it's 32bit only but you should be able to get to 2.3.5.

However you might be running an old Nano image on a smaller card. 2GB is the smallest image available for 2.3.X.

                    Allright.... it WORKS!!!!!

                    What i did...

Had an older 4gb cf card that showed dma problems, so i started with a fresh new 16gb card..

Downloaded pfsense 2.3.5 from the website with nano (embedded) en serial console, i386

                    Flashed the card with win32diskimager

At first i was getting the same dma crap.. so google to the rescue..

Booted, and when it prompted to go to shell i did that

Added a line similar to set hint.ata.0.mode=POI4

That worksed for the install, needed to make it stick during bootup, so waited for the install to complete and did a vi /boot/loader.conf.local

Added the line (hint.ata.0.mode=POI4) saved the changes :w :q and rebooted the box....

All worked out... box is running in a test cycle now

@stephenw10 : can i assume this version of pfsense 2.3.5 is still safe enough to connect to the interwebs as a router / firewall?

Yes. You should see the patch update to 2.3.5p2 available. That is the current version though it's likely to be the last release in the 2.3.5 branch.

                            Gentlemen,

I would like to thank you for resurrection the x6500e,

It’s in working condition right now, and i am happy with it (allthough it still produces a lot of noise even with the fans spinning at BB in the bios)

This box will be a great steppingstool to learn about pfsense and upgrade later to a dedicated box with more hardware power

Thx again for all you help ;)

You can set the fans to a lower speed using WGXepc. BB (or maybe BA) is the lowest speed the BIOS can take because the fan tacho reading for some reason hits a limit and hangs. Once booted though you can go lower.

32bit binary that should run on your box. It been a while since I tried the 32bit version though the last box I had still ran it at 2.3.4.

Source code if it doesn't and you need to recompile it:
