Questions About Dial On Demand
-
I guess I don't understand the purpose of dial on demand. It sounds like a setting from the dial up modem days. I just setup pfsense to work with my always on CenturyLink Gigabit FTTH connection. It uses PPPoE with a VLAN. I found a tutorial https://kdemaria.wordpress.com/2015/04/22/how-to-configure-pfsense-2-2-2-for-centurylink-gigabit-seattle-edition/ that specifically says I should enable dial on demand with a zero timeout. What would be the purpose of this, or is this an incorrect suggestion? Would it make any difference if I had a conventional copper wired DSL or cable modem internet connection? I've tried both enabling and disabling this setting and my internet connection doesn't seem to change. I'm confused. Thanks!

Bump! Anyone?

Mmm, not sure why you would do that. Just leave it disabled for an always-on connection. That how to is for a much older version.
The setting is still useful for cellular connections where you are using expensive data just being connected for example.Steve
