pfSense and leased line (UK)
-
Hi all,
Only ever had ADSL or FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) before, and now considering a leased line to replace our 3 lines, probably keeping 1 x FTTC as a fallback. I don't know much about leased line technology in the UK, but what I believe I will get installed is a "Fibre Ethernet" 100 up and 100 down circuit. I presume this will be presented as ethernet on RJ45 coming from some black box that BT will install. Can anyone else with a similar configuration let me know if there are any considerations for using this with my pfSense installation (just a PC with 5 ethernet ports) ?
Many thanks

If its anything like I've installed for various companies in the UK it will be provided over the 21CN and you'll be asked what presentation you require, ethernet or Fibre out of the 21 CN NTU.

Ethernet port directly into the pfSense WAN port and pop the supplied addresses on your WAN interface.
Ask them for IPv6 address space even if you don't use it.
I'd be looking at a router rather than a PC if I was getting a leased line installed.

Thanks nogbad. Sadly I'm old enough to just about remember noggin...
When I said PC it's a pretty meaty gaming motherboard and well specced - do you think it's not up to the throughput?

It should be fine, it would just look more tidy, pop the 21 CN NTU and the PC in a lockable rack.
Also might be worth investing in a UPS if you dont have one.

Andy I think our cabinet looks fairly tidy and has a U or two available.....

Looks great.
I do hate those HP racks when network kit needs to go in them, not much space for cable runs down the sides
