Hey folks - I feel like this comes up with some frequency but for the life of me, I couldn't find a thread with a fix.
I run avahi to support mDNS between vLANs (for IoT stuff). It works, except all of my apple devices --which is to say virtually my entire network --experience the hostname(number) problem. Every device is host(5643) and then when they sleep and wake it increments.

Think you'll need to go into System Prefs -> Sharing and remove the (123) from the name.

I gave up using AVAHI and added the following to every interface I needed multicast:-
