Both of these appliances are in a similar neighborhood price wise, how do they compare in terms of performance? I saw the comparison chart from the October newsletter ( https://www.netgate.com/blog/netgate-dual-ethernet-minnowBoard-turbot-with-pfsense-special-offer.html ), comparing the MBT models to a SG-2220, but I was more curious on how the quad core compared to a SG-3100.

      Thanks!

We don't have any published numbers to compare the two, but they each have certain advantages depending on your point of view. The quad core MBT may have an edge with small packets since the NICs can have more queues, but they can both easily max out a gig interface at 1500b. SG-3100 has more ports with its switch, MBT-4220 only has two ports. MBT-4220 has a fan, SG-3100 is fanless. MBT-4220 has HDMI, SG-3100 has serial console. the MBT-4220 is a nice box but the SG-3100 wins out for me.

Don't know about the MBT-4220 but the SG-3100 is a great Box I can tell you. :-)

@jimp actually, even without any published numbers, what you did tell me was rather helpful. Thank you.

Can anyone tell me if either of these units can reliably saturate a gigabit connection? I had to spin a custom overkill box for my Cox gigabit because my SG-2440 wasn't able to go much over 650-750Mbps,

@Ozy311 - What does "reliably saturate" mean for you?

Speedtest sustain in the mid 950’s reliably. I can get that with my pfS VM running on an overkill server, but prefer to use an appliance for power savings and simplicity in the home. My old SG2440 putters out around 650-750 depending on load.

Here's a pretty good SG-3100 video review, with a teardown and speedtests:
