Tried to update, got the message: "System update failed!" in the red bar at the top of the update page, Below it, the Updating System window has "2.4.4 version of pfsense is available" and thats it.

No errors shown in the General Log. Most recent log entry is restarting packages. Firewall seems to be running on the old version.

Is there someplace special to look for update errors?

Rebooted and tried again, same problem.

      Netgate purchased hardware, FW-7551.

I've had nothing but problems with updates the last several times. Whats going on?

Some versions see that the first time when updating from the GUI as the page loses connection with the backend. Usually a second attempt will succeed there.
However I would run the upgrade from the command line using menu option 13. That way you will see more feedback if it does fail again.

In my case every one of the boxes I did that update on did exactly that the first try. Second try always succeeded..

My installation is a bog standard firewall on Netgate hardware, nothing else. It has one package installed; AutoConfigBackup. It does not do anything other that provide LAN and DMZ routing to/from WAN. No Traffic shaping, no redundancy, it has about a dozen firewall rules.

So what this tells me is that the GUI update is a joke and should not be present, because if updates do not work from the GUI on this basic system, what does work?

And no, the second time around it did not work.

But it did mess my system up. Now I see that the one package I have installed (autoconfigbackup) is not installed correctly. The package manager indicates "Newer version available" and "Package is configured but not (fully) installed or deprecated". What else might be messed up now? And I assume that I can't reliably use the auto config backup now.

It will be next weekend before a window opens that allows an update from the console or reinstall. Fortunately, this is a local device, I cannot imagine using pfSense remotely.

            Frustrated.

Note: I manage several unmanaged VPS linux cloud servers across the country and am a software server side developer. They are not BSD, but various flavors of CentOS and Debian and I have never had this type of problem from point upgrades. I bought Netgate to make sure I did not have these kinds of problems. I though I was buying a box that would just work at least for such basic things as point upgrades.

After three times upgrade is successful.

Updating using the command line seemed to partially work.

Now it says no packages installed. Have not tried to install packages, just happy to finally get it partially working again.

Summary for those of you at home, don't plan on UI updates working.
