Check the boot logs for errors attaching the driver.

@stephenw10 I solved this problem by upgrading the firmware to the latest version

currently pfsense or freebsd provide only old version of the firmware for this card and it is ok for some versions of the chips on T580-SO-CR

the output of --- sysctl -a | grep t5nex should be

        dev.t5nex.0.%desc: Chelsio T580-LP-SO

        some chips with version
        dev.t5nex.0.firmware_version: 1.19.1.0
witch is what freebsd/pfsense provide are giving output
        dev.t5nex.0.%desc: Chelsio T580-LP-SO-CR
it should be upgraded to version
        dev.t5nex.0.firmware_version: 1.21.5.0
in order to work properly I think version 3 of the chips must be upgraded to v1.19.1.0
        otherwise won't work on pfSense

        Thank you

P.S I am not an engineer I am explaining it the best I can :)

Hmm, 1.19.1 is indeed what we ship in 2.4.4:
          https://github.com/pfsense/FreeBSD-src/tree/RELENG_2_4_4/sys/dev/cxgbe/firmware

However that's the most recent version even in FreeBSD master:

@stephenw10 You should consider upgrading the firmware on the next version. Seems not all of them are properly working with this version v1.19.1.0. The card I ordered was brand new so probably there are new versions of that card's chip and required v1.21.5.0 and I mean it because I even could not make it to work with Windows Server nor FreeNAS and Ubuntu latest. So far I have no problems with this card. The version I have is a compact design with a small heat sink on the right

            0_1541892744424_photo_2018-09-29.jpg

I've never be able to run the other version on the left with long heat sink. I don't know why!!!!

This server is my second node of my HA cluster and so far I encounter no issues even working better then I expected.

Now I am going to build FreeNAS server with the same card and Dell R620 and will see how it goes.

If there's a problem with that firmware there should be bug open and it should be against FreeBSD. We often have our own bug to mirror it but we would not want to update the firmware separately from FreeBSD master unless there was a very good reason. Like we are using some feature that FreeBSD does not and as far as I know that isn't the case.

I have a DELL R320 server with an Intel X520-DA2 card in it and having similar problems with the 10G ports.

Please explain how you downgraded the Lifecycle Controller to version 1.1.18. I can't seem to figure that out.

I only have the idrac7 basic. Not the express or enterprise license. However, I would like to get the enterprise license. I currently have LC controller turned off. I’m running version 2.15 of Idrac7. The bios version is 2.5.1.

@pglover19 v2.15 is not legacy version. You need to downgrade it to legacy version 1.57.57

download those 2 files and put them on USB stick

                      downloads.dell.com/FOLDER01250234M/2/Lifecycle-Controller_Application_74H61_WN32_1.1.1.18_A00.EXE
                      https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER02171698M/1/ESM_Firmware_XH6FX_WN64_1.57.57_A00.EXE
enable LC controller from the BIOS
                      save settings and restart
F10 will take you to LC Controller

Go to Firmware Update--->Launch Firmware Update
from there tick Local Drive(CD or DVD or USB)

First Downgrade the IDRAC7 and then LC Controller

NOTE : I never done it this way so I am not sure if its going to work

I have an Enterprise License where is much easier to upgrade and downgrade the firmware
but if you going to buy a Enterprise License make sure you disable auto upgrade option from the idrac7 before you downgrade the firmware

unless you have an KVM I suggest you buy a License from eBay is $57

I finally got the IDRAC and LC Controller downgraded to the correct versions on my 2 DELL R320 servers. The IDRAC downgrade went easy on both R320s. However; the LC Controller on one of the R320 kept failing. I had to remove the PCI cards (X520-DA2 and I350-T4) from the server and it successfully downgraded to version 1.1.1.18.

                          Thanks for all your help.

@pglover19 Just remember if you upgrade to Enterprise License turn off automatic update from the iDRAC Settings--->Update and Rollback--->Automatic Update or iDrac will update your LC to the latest Urgent Version automatically and keep your iDrac to v1.57.57 Legacy

I successfully installed pfSense on 2 DELL R320 servers this weekend to replace my WatchGuard XTM 525 (primary) and XTM 810 (backup) pfSense appliances. Now I'm ready for the next version of pfSense (2.5) that supports AES-NI.
