First build - gaming QoS mainly
-
Hello guys! I’m new in this forum, I’m getting very interested in pfSense and I’m in search for some advices.
Little intro: I’ve got an ADSL that maxes out at 10.5/0.8 Mbps. Me and my girlfrend share that pretty poor link for streaming, gaming and browsing. Normal usage, but I’ve become exigent about ping stability and bufferbloat. I suffer very high lag in game while she’s scrolling Instagram feed, or playing Netflix, or sharing pictures.
Actual setup doesn’t statisfy me (Draytek Vigor 130 modem bridged to Draytek 2926Vac).
I’m having issues understanding what build is recommended. Some suggest Qotom, some suggest to build DIY solutions. I’d like to build it by myself, but I’m afraid of purchasing wrong products and having problems with drivers and so on.
So.. I have around 20 devices constantly connected (A/C, vacuum robot, NAS, two desktops, two TVs, two tablets, two phones, one console, two ip cameras, home assistant, wash machines, hubs, etc), no VPNs or heavy requests. Almost all I want to focus on is QoS.Consider that I’m on 10.5/0.8 Mbps now, and probably reach maximum 50/10 Mbps with fiber to the cabinet line; in some years, we’ll receive fiber to the home (so I expect to pay for a 300 or 500 Mbps link).
What can I buy now, to be a little future proof and upgradable?
I have spare notebooks and old PCs around home, but really I’d prefer spend money on a brand new setup, also low on energy requirements.
Thank you in advance and sorry such long first post. ;)

If you have an old PC and two NICs available you should test with that first. Even if it's horribly inefficient it will prove out whether any traffic shaping is going to help you here.
If it does and you then want to get something more dedicated it's obviously hard for me to recommend anything other than our own products.

Jim did some nice run-through CoDel/FQ_CODEL with Limiters to avoid Bufferbloat in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8nL81DzTlU
If you consider buy new Hardware I can totally recommend the Netgate SG-3100.-Rico

Well, buying a netgate product would be very nice but I live in Italy and shipping / custom fees scare me.. even if I’d like to support pfSense development

There are Netgate Partners around the World, even in Italy- ;-) Check https://www.netgate.com/partners/locator.html#italy

From what I can see, a lot of these partners are more interested in integration services & total solutions, and not just selling you a Netgate unit. I've looked at 6 different Canadian partners, and you can't even find a mention of Netgate/pfSense on their websites. If you dig deep, you may find a reference that just points back to Netgate.com. Nobody lists models or prices. It's pretty disappointing, but Netgate can't really control how their partners market them.

Well you can still go old school and send them a mail, or go ancient and give them a call.

I'm in the UK and used Amica Networks, great prompt service.

@grimson It's been my experience that when you try to buy a unit from a solution-provider that isn't really interested in selling them standalone, they will charge you a fortune.
