Pfsense 2.2 on APU 1D board unstable - reboots about every third day
-
We're having problems with pfsense 2.2 (fresh install - no upgrade, no IPSec, a minimum catch-all rule allowing all traffic through the system) running on a APU 1D board (AMD G-T40E with 3*GB network, 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD).
About every third day the system reboots, logs reveal nothing but the reboot and no email notifications are sent out.The same hardware has been running 2.1.x for about a year without any reboot problems. The old installation was 32-bit and I followed the recommendation to go 64-bit and did a fresh install of 2.2 (64-bit) and did not do any backup/restore of the old configuration.
CPU, RAM usage and temperatures are normal while running. The system runs fine otherwise without any hiccups, but these reboots are getting me worried. Where should I start looking? I will hookup a serial-console to the system to see if I can catch a reboot when it happens, but I only have access to serial-to-USB converters and I have my doubts of them running for prolonged period…
Any help greatly appreciated,
/Mattias -
I have the same problem with you.
-
I'm sorry to hear… could be some FreeBSD incompatibility then...
I'll see if the capture gives anything and if not I'll reinstall 2.1.5 32-bit that I know is working. -
Those boards should only be using 64-bit, not 32-bit.
Give a 2.2.1 snapshot a try from https://snapshots.pfsense.org/

Day four and still no reboot here. I have another APU 1D that I can experiment more with and I'll install 2.2.1 snapshot on that. The one acting up is the main gateway for the company and I don't feel comfortable running a snapshot on that one…

Give a 2.2.1 snapshot a try from https://snapshots.pfsense.org/
Why? Sounds like he's running 64-bit fresh install.

Why? Sounds like he's running 64-bit fresh install.
That's right - it is a fresh install, didn't even bother getting over config, rrd etc (we switched ISPs so old stats no longer needed).
2.2.1 maybe fixed some things in its core that could affect stability? -
Give a 2.2.1 snapshot a try from https://snapshots.pfsense.org/
Why? Sounds like he's running 64-bit fresh install.
Because 2.2.1 has fixes in it, including ones for some sources of known panics. And more fixes are still coming.
https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/2.2.1_New_Features_and_Changes#GeneralAnd at this point it should only be more stable than 2.2.

Same issue here, different hardware though. I upgraded to the latest snapshot hoping it would help, but after 2 days had another random restart.
Going to roll back to 2.1.5 for now.
I've used the report crash option every time it crashes, I don't know where that goes exactly though. I also don't have that kernel dump to paste here because it's already sent and deleted.
Here is my boot log if that helps:
