SG-8860-1U ... replace noisy fan?
-
There were a number of fans fitted to those and I believe the enclosures differed slightly also.
That is just the single fan unit? The desktop 8860 model had a only the fansink on the CPU and it required very little cooling even from that. I would imagine almost any fan would be sufficient. It was actually a 4 wire temperature controlled fan too so you could probably upgrade to that if you need it to be even quieter.

Right - the enclosure has a single fan (at least this particular unit was fitted with a 3-wire fan). The CPU also has a fan on it.
The motherboard header is a 4-pin type. So you're saying pretty much any fan would work? I see 5V and 12V fans available, I am pretty sure these are 12V - is that right? Thanks again

Would this one work you think?

Well, gonna go ahead and order it and give it a try...

Hi Luke, sorry. Yes the cpu fan we fitted is 12V 4 pin so I would expect that fan to work there just fine.

Just wanted to report back: I installed the fan yesterday. Was an easy swap. The original factory fan (at least in this unit) was a 3-pin. But, the motherboard does have a 4-pin header.
The new fan is so quiet that at first we thought it wasn't working! Still moves enough air that everything was staying nice and cool. So overall, great success.

Nice. That was the Noctua fan?

Yes, the Noctua that I linked above.

Noctua fans are excellent. I had one on a box that habitually killed multiple fans and the Noctua ended up outliving that box and is now on one of my 3D printers.
If you find that it isn't keeping cool enough and need to move more air there is a Noctua 40x20 as well. It has a bit higher cfm/static pressure but it does make a little more noise. Still not too bad, though.

Cool. Thanks again for the help guys.
Merry Christmas!!
