I just updated using the GUI and got a report that update was successful. However, the device is not coming back up. After about 4 minutes, all lights turn off and during the time it is on I have red activity and status lights. I set this up a few years ago using the built in software. It has worked great for me and now I'm at a bit of a loss.

I'm working on getting the necessary software to console to it from my Mac, but that takes time over a cellular connection and I don't have much experience with this. I do have a backup, both from before and after I removed the other installed packages, from before I did the update.

I'd appreciate any suggestions about how to best proceed.

If the status lights are only ever red, then it may be a hardware issue. Open a support request at https://go.netgate.com/ and describe what it's doing.

I don't have, and can't afford, that level of support. Any other suggestions? I'm getting nothing on my console connection. This really sucks that this simple update seems to have killed my firewall.

You don't need to purchase support for hardware assistance, go ahead and open up a request there.

The update didn't do that. The reboot during the update may have brought it to light, though. Hardware failures like that tend to lurk until a reboot, it just so happens that your reboot was during the upgrade.

              Did that. Thank you.
