            @kom I use that too, but it requires the memstick version. when I use the .iso version, it says it's not bootable

              In *nix it's simple as

              dd bs=4M if=pfSense-CE-2.3-RELEASE-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdx

                @rico ok, I've just dome exactly that. it converts the iso into an img, but since the original iso is not bootable, also the resulting img is not bootable

                    OK, I just went to the effort of grabbing that pfSense-CE-2.3-RELEASE-amd64.iso file. I then created a simple FreeBSD 11 vm in VMware Workstation. I attached the ISO to the DVD drive. Voila, it booted just fine.

                    I don't know what you're doing but you must be doing something wrong. Is your device set to BIOS mode or UEFI mode? I've had trouble booting a USB drive on Dell blades with UEFI mode enabled.

                      I know... the scenario involving a VM works
                      I need to install it on a physical server, tho - with a bootable usb stick
                      if you try to make a bootable usb stick with Rufus, it gives the error I showed earlier "this image is either non-bootable, ..."

                        There is no practical difference between booting on ISO off of a virtual DVD drive and booting that same ISO off of a USB stick, unless your hardware has some issue like BIOS vs UEFI, as I previously said.

                          I'm not questioning the theory. I'm questioning the practice: if I try to make a bootable USB with Rufus, it just doesn't do it! 😂

                            Use your favorite image/backup software, take an image/backup of the current system and restore it to the HDD of the testing system. This way you are also sure you didn't forget to replicate a setting/modification.

                              @selianto pfSense 2.3.x is End of Life. As such, we do not offer older releases for download, nor do we support them.
