Set hostname on DHCP client without adding static mapping?

Is it possible to set hostname on DHCP clients without adding static mappings?
-
How would you propose doing that? Host names point to IP addresses. If you don't have a static mapping, you don't have a consistent address to point to.
The only thing I can think of is DHCP option 12, where the client provides it's own host name. However, I have never tried that.

Wouldn't it be possible to pair the hostname with the MAC-adress?

That's not the way DHCP works.

Yes !
Answer You need DHCP static mappings - or a host override, which "hard locks" a host to an IP.
