      I've seen some other questions on the forums about which NICs support GigE SFP modules in pfsense & wanted to share my experience.

      I have a working model that allows you to go directly from carrier fiber (in my case single mode GigE) into a pfsense firewall.

      My setup:

      HP DL380 G5 with Trendnet TEG-ECSFP & using Cisco branded SFP module + Running pfsense v2.2.2

      A few notes of caution:
      1. This is a full height card, will not fit in a half height slot
      2. This is a PCI Express card, make sure you have the PCIe slot that supports it

      This card is based on the Realtek driver and the NIC shows up as interface "re0". I can't speak to throughput because my carrier commit rate is astoundingly low.

      I hope this helps anyone trying to accomplish the same thing!
