WAN speed 900 mbps LAN speed 50 mbps, please help!

Something changed in pfsense not sure when exactly.
I used to get at least 450 mbps on wired connection to LAN1 interface. Now I only get ~50 mbps. When I connect the same laptop to ATT gateway it gives me 900+ mbps.
Don't have any VPN server, all offloading options are off (boxes checked) in System -> Advanced -> Networking.
It's a fairly simple setup w a handful of ports forwarded - some manually some automatically. LAN2 (the motherboard interface on my pfsense PC) is used for guest - I don't care about it's speed as much.
Running
2.4.4-RELEASE-p2 (amd64)
built on Wed Dec 12 07:40:18 EST 2018
FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p6On
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz
4 CPUs: 1 package(s) x 4 core(s)
AES-NI CPU Crypto: Yes (active)This PC is dedicated to pfsense with a SSD drive.
Greatly appreciate any pointers on how to isolate the issue.
I should say that many months back it was working fine - meaning LAN speeds were 450+ mbps.
not sure what has changed in pfsense. Please help!

What kind of NICs are you using?

Hello Tim,
HP 412651-001 NC360T dual port Gigabit Ethernet adapter board. The first port (on top, away from the motherboard) is configured for WAN and the lower port is LAN.
I tested WAN speed on my Win 10 laptop by directly connecting the WAN cable and then tested the LAN speed by directly connecting the LAN cable to my laptop. So as I write this, I am realizing that I need to rule out a bad cable on the LAN side.
I am out of town rest of the week and will not be able to test it before the weekend. In the meantime, I'd greatly appreciate tips on anything I could do on the pfsense box to isolate issues like this. It's kinda black box to me right now.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Tim,

This was what I was looking for (from their tech specs): The HP NC360T PCI Express Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapter features a high performance Intel 82571EB chipset and offers a four lane (x4) PCI Express bus based on the PCIe v 1.0a standard, yielding faster transmissions with lower CPU utilization than earlier solutions.
I wanted to rule out RealTek NICs, and this does just that.

@tim-mcmanus thanks for confirming that the NIC board is not likely to be the culprit. My setup was working flawlessly giving me 450+ Mbps speeds on the LAN side. Thinking of what I may have changed other than regular updates to pfsense releases, only one thing comes to mind. I attempted to turn on a VPN server. But never completed it and recently deleted all items related to VPN server. Not sure I left something in there that's slowing things down - I don't see any alarming consumption stats in the dashboard. Links were also not showing any errors.
