Vlan on non pfsense ports
-
Very new to pfsense and novice about network, so please bear with me.
I am planning to buy a 1100 pfsense appliance : is the number if vlans I can create limited by the physical ports of the 1100?
Can I connect any switch type to one of ports of the 1100 and create more vlans?
Thanks for your time. -
You can create as many VLANs as you like and tag/trunk them to a switch or other dot1q-capable device.
Are you thinking about a few or hundreds?

Thanks for your answer. I am still a little confused about how vlans work. Let's say that I have
Netgate 1100>switch1>switch2>wired client
How do I configure the wired client to connect to a specific vlan that I created with pfsense on the netgate 1100? -
Umm.

Great, thanks for the link.
I think I finally got my answer ie I need a managed and not just any switch to configure vlans. -
Doesn't need to be fully managed... What they call a "smart" switch these days can do vlans.. They can be as cheap as say like $30-40 for a 8 port gig switch.. It doesn't do much from a features point of view more than "vlans"
And if your going to have downstream switches connected to another switch - as long as "all" the devices that are going to be connected to the dumb switch are in the same vlan.. It doesn't have to be smart or managed..
The more ports a switch has the more its likely to be "managed" vs just "smart" ie will have a much larger feature set and be able to do all kinds of stuff in addition to supporting vlans.
