VLAN Questions .. A little Help would be great!
-
Hello,
I am currently setting up another VLAN on my network:
I guess what my real question is … does a device that needs to be assigned a static IP address on my VLAN of 192.168.5.x... does it need to have a VLAN aware Network Adapter?
I ask this because I temporarily setup a workstation that has a Intel Network adapter that has a property tab for VLANs. I setup the VLAN on the adapter, assigned a static IP and the machine was on my 192.168.5.x network which is handled by pfsense box.
There is a 3rd party vendor that is setting up a Audio / Visual system and we agreed that this should be on its own VLAN... the 192.168.5.x VLAN.
The software in the AV equipment is a Linux based system and he states that he has no way of assigning a VLAN on the adapter and that he has never had to do it before.
All other devices ( 6 wireless access points work flawlessly with VLAN 5 - 192.168.5.x... Pfsense with DHCP services on the 192.168.5.x network works well with no problems. Just trying to get this one AV device to work is my challenge.
From the HP 1910 switch - 24 port... The tagged ports for VLAN 5 is as follows:
Port 13 - Which the AV device is connected to
Port 17 - Connected to Pfsense - LAN
Ports 19 through 24 - Access Points throughout the building
Hopefully that is enough information and maybe someone can give some insight / advice for my situation.
Thank you
Sincerely,
Kell -
Make port 13 untagged on VLAN 5 and the AV device won't need to know anything about VLANs.

Thank you for the reply! :)
So, if I untag port 13… then the AV device should be able to be assigned a static of lets say...192.168.5.200 and it will be able to communicate with other devices on the VLAN that is assigned a 192.168.5.x ?
Thank you for helping.
Sincerely,
Kell -
Non VLAN away NICs can use untagged ports and only supports one VLAN, tagged ports need a VLAN aware NIC and can support more than one VLAN.
Except for special ACLs, all devices in a VLAN can talk directly to each other if they're on the same subnet or they have routing tables that allow them to know the other subnets are local.

Thank you for the clarification… I will give it a try.
