Inbound LoadBalancing Question
-
I was wondering if this is possible.
We plan on setting up 2 pfSense boxes in Carp each with 2-3 WAN connections. Our clients connect to an URL (or IP address) for offsite backups to us in this system and the data is transferred to 1 internal server. Would it be possible to have the clients only point at 1 IP or URL for this connection but have pfsense loadbalance it so that if 1 of the wan connections is maxed that new connections are redirected to a different IP/URL to reach the same server?
Thanks!

This is only doable by using a dns server that resolves the hostname to the different wans roundrobin. Other options might be possible depending on the way that backup works.

Is this a DNS server that would be sitting outside our network I assume (ISP level or something)?

It depends where your domain is registered. You might also be able to use pfSense for this when having the dns-server-package installed. Probably talk to your hoster for that domain about what you want to do and what's the easiest way to achieve this. They might be able to setup roundrobin dns for you or advice you how to do it.
