Does pfsense generate internet traffic on the second connection if first connexion is operational?
-
Hi,
I am currently using pfsense with a fiber connection.
I would like to add a second connection in case of failure (failover use-case), it would be a 4G connection.
The 4G offer in question is charged at 3US$ per day if used (used = internet traffic)Do you know if pfsense will generate internet traffic on the second connection even when my Fibre connection is operational?
Basically, does it check line availability even when it does not switch on ? (if fiber connexion is operational)This information will allow me to know if my 4G connection will be considered as used every day or only when there is a failover switch, this is an important point because the billing will not be the same.
Many thanks for your help.

Have a look at gateway groups.
dpinger should only ping the 4g gateway address, it would depend on the 4g supplier if they count traffic to the gateway as billable.

Thanks for your answer, it doesn't seems simple to recover this information from 4G supplier...
So much person who are not technical, like many hedlpdesk in this case, too lame... -
here where i live the ppp connection itself is connsidered internet traffic and they bill for it
if the ppp connection is up there is always traffic passing even if it's only to check for the connection status -

I can't see them charging for a ping to the gateway as its non internet traffic.
