You need to update to the latest coreboot first.

I just checked, and I seem to be on CoreBoot 01.00.00.10.

AFAIK this is the latest version.

        Anything else I should check?

          Try to add

          hw.ixgbe.unsupported_sfp=1

          in /boot/loader.conf.local

That doesn't make a difference - my understanding is that flag is for unsupported optics in the NIC itself - not for the NIC?

I also tried with a Intel X520-DA2 in the same slot, and it had the same symptoms.

No serial console output, and fans spin at 100%, machine does not appear to boot.

Has anybody successfully installed any PCIe cards in the Netgate XG-7100, and if so, which ones? Are there any SFP+ cards that are known to work?

@victorhooi said in XG-7100 and X710-DA4 card causes fans to spin at 100%?:

No serial console output, and fans spin at 100%, machine does not appear to boot.

I just tried booting up with a single-port Mellanox ConnectX-3 card, and that appeared to work fine.

Is it something specific about the Intel cards?

That being said - it appears the Mellanox cards don't work on pfSense out of the box (e.g. need to add drivers). This is why I went for the Intel's, since I assumed the drivers were included due to the onboard Intel X533 ports.

Anybody have any idea why Intel cards don't seem to boot though?

Yeah, open a ticket and we can test it.

If the fans spin at 100% continually then Coreboot is not running at all, that usually sets the fan controller to LUT mode in the first few seconds. That implies it's not booting for some reason like a hardware incompatibility issue.

We just bought 6 x XG-7100 1U - so yes, keen to see if we can get the units working.

i would like to update the bios if that fixes the problem but dont have pfsense installed on the system. is there a way of flashing the bios with a flash image? any ideas? thanx a lot :)

You may need pfSense though (or maybe FreeBSD) to get the correct flashrom version.
