PFsense SG3100 & Actiontec DSL modem with transparent bridging
-
Hello all,
I have a configuration question. I lease a static block of 8 public IP's. I'm thinking about putting my Actiontec C3000A DSL modem into transparent bridge mode and configuring PPPoE in pfsense to pull my public gateway IP directly my SG3100's WAN interface so I can have an extra public IP available to my network if needed.
Is this configuration advisable or reliable? Figured I'd ask here before I do it.
Thanks everyone,

Yes, that's usually the recommended way.
However I'm slightly confused about how it is set currently. Do they route the 8 IPs to you and you use them all internally? The one IP you would be freeing using on the Actiontec LAN currently?
That can be a difficult setup to replicate if they are using numberless ptp link for WAN.

@stephenw10 here’s the deal I face. I’m on CenturyLink dsl. I need my pfsense box to have a static public ip. I have a few choices. #1 I can lease a block of ip’s (they only offer 1 static or a block of 8), or I can setup transparent bridging on my modem so that my pfsense box gets the public ip. I’ve been paying for the block of 8 so I could get a public ip at my pfsense box.
If I can get transparent bridging to work reliably, I will cancel my block of 8 and just go with one static IP.

Transparent bridging should work fine for PPPoE DSL. I have two modems doing that here right now.
If they just hand you the same IP every time that should be no problem at all, very easy setup.
If you have to actually set that IP statically it can be more painful.Steve

@stephenw10 currently I only have a need for one public ip at the moment. I honestly don’t foresee needing other workstations on my network to have public IP addresses.
