I have CenturyLink gigabit WAN (PPPoE)and pfSense running on a custom built server with a 3.1 GHz XEON 4c/4t CPU and Intel 82579LM and 82574L NICs (em driver, not igb). It's very stable as is, but I would like to run ntopng again like I did when I had my previous ISP (Comcast, 50 Mb/s). The problem is every time I enable ntopng, pfSense hangs after a day or two and has to be restarted. If I disable ntopng then pfSense runs super stable again.

Any idea why ntopng now hangs pfSense with gigabit WAN?

@digity My guess would be the PPPoE...I am sure you know starting NtopNG launches a new tab.

        pfSense+ 23.09 Lenovo Thinkcentre M93P SFF Quadcore i7 dual Raid-ZFS 128GB-SSD 32GB-RAM PCI-Intel i350-t4 NIC, -Intel QAT 8950.
        pfSense+ 23.09 VM-Proxmox, Dell Precision Xeon-W2155 Nvme 500GB-ZFS 128GB-RAM PCIe-Intel i350-t4, Intel QAT-8950, P-cloud.

          What exactly about the PPPoE?

Yes, I'm aware ntopng has it's own tab/webUI. ntopng runs fine for a day or two before hanging pfSense. During that time I can use and navigate ntopng without problems.

How does it hang? Completely unresponsive? Even to ctl+t at the console?

Do you get a crash report when it boots?

Do you see any error in the system log?

              Steve

Yes, the internet connection drops out and pfSense is completely unresponsive, including the console.

I doubt PPPoE is the problem. When ntopng is disabled pfSense is super stable with CenturyLink gigabit fiber and PPPoE. In fact pfSense has been up 232 days straight without a hiccup or restart (this was the last time I tried ntopng).

Try ctl+t at the console if you haven't already. That can often respond when nothing else does. If it's stuck waiting for some process that will show it.

If there is no crash report and no errors shown that starts to look like a hardware issue, probably RAM.

Does it use significantly more ram when ntopng is running?

                    Steve

It's been 232 days since I last tried. Is there a pertinent log file that would still hold entries for that far back?

Unlikely unless you increased the log sizes massively or are exporting to an external syslog server.

You will have to enable it again and wait for it to fail.
