SM 2758 How to get all 4 nics working
-
Hi Guys
I have pfsense up and running flawlessly :) My motherboard has 4 onboard nice (igb0-3) I have igb0 set to wan and igb1 set to an. But when I goto activate nic 3 and 4 it gives me OPT choice not an. What I would like is to just make these last to ports just regular lans ports so I would have 1 wan and 3 Lan to plug into. Gotta be something stupid that I am missing.
Also in the stats for Lan in/out errors I am getting out errors (approx 600) but no in errors and no in or out errors on wan. I searched in the forums and this seems to be a "cosmetic" defect either with pfsense or the lans ports not being used. If i get ports 3 and 4 working will I see 0?
Thanks
Peter

The actual NIC interfaces used by FreeBSD are the igb0-3 interfaces. As long as you see those, they're all present and accounted for.
LAN, WAN, OPTx are all just notations used by pfSense to identify what each interface is. You could just as easily change OPT1 to DMZ instead, and make OPT2 GUEST if you wanted. They're just identifiers, nothing more. :)
If you want to use all three of the remaining ports for your LAN, then you want to bridge them together, I believe. I haven't done this myself… I just feed my LAN port into an 8-port switch. I believe you'll want to create a bridge with all three interfaces, then make the bridge be LAN, rather than one of the interfaces. Just be careful in how you do this and apply everything, because you might lose access to your box over the network, and will need to use the console to reset.

Not sure what you were seeing there but I can't recall a time where that was a cosmetic issue on igb NICs at a minimum. The error counters come from what the NIC itself reports. Can check the output of 'sysctl dev.igb' to get the details. Depends on what percent of the total that is as to whether or not you should care about errors there. 600 in 6000 packets, you have a problem. 600 in 6 billion packets, probably normal and safe to ignore.

Will check that. Thx. It's 600 Ina huge number don't know exactly but probably 0.1 percent but I would still like to know why when wan has zero and lan out is zero. Only on in
