XG-7100 SFP+ ports with ethernet

Ive been trying to run an ethernet SFP+ module for one of the two sfp+ modules in the 7100 to free up the rj45 ports on the built in switch. I could never get ix0 to work, it would just never select a media type, even after turning the interface on and off. I got ix1 to work, but pfsense says its down, no carrier, even though it has acquired a DHCP IP from my ISP and the internet works perfectly well from the LAN side.
This is very strange, why is it doing this? How do I fix it?

did you try to set speed and duplex to 1000Base-T or 10Gb instead of autoselect?

Ah, now I feel stupid! Completely glazed over the speed drop down under interfaces. Thank you.
Set it to 1000baseSX, now its working.
