can i somehow install os in it using my primary system and then plug this harddisk in my old sytem and hope it will boot ?
what are other options ?
i have virtualbox/vmware workstation 10/ … -
Get some more recent box from dumpster? Other than that, you can install this on whatever other system that has IDE and move the HDD after that. (You will have to re-assign network interfaces probably on boot.) Or:

well thanks for your reply.
the harddisk that i took from p3 has no os etc installed in it. for plop i would have to install it ..i think in the past i tried plop on this sytem and had no luck ..
anyhow the ide harddisk was connected via ide to usb converter and its power supply died after only half hour use ..
i will buy some other low cost/power/size system and try on that.

you want to run pfsense on at best a 12 year old computer??? There has to be something more recent…

Hey! My home rig is a 7 year old Quad-core with 6 GB RAM. Just because something is old, that doesn't mean it's useless.

there is a HUGE freaking difference between 7 years and 12 years in computer tech… Freaking HUGE!!!
