Hey guys, first post so I apologize if I post this in the wrong place. Regardless, I was wondering if It’s possible to run PFSense as a docker container?

I have a simple home network with a dns sinkhole and a Nighthawk X6 as my router. I am currently building a small home server running Ubuntu and I was going to use it as a NAS, plex server, and maybe a few smaller applications all in their own docker containers. Then I started wondering if it’d be possible to also use PFSense in a container and have my X6 as the access point. I saw a rumor on reddit that said there was work being done to make a PFSense container but that was posted in October of 2019. This would be pretty neat if you ask me but I’m also an enthusiast so idk if the novelty I find in the idea would be useful at scale.

Idk if the Linux kernel would support PFSense. Isn’t it based off of FreeBSD?

No. It is its own complete operating system. It can be virtualized by a hypervisor, but not run in a container.

@jimp would it be possible to run a hypervisor that distributes resources in tandem with docker? Sorry if this is silly lol

No idea. But doubtful. If the docker-hypervisor relationship is completely ignorant of the guest OS then maybe, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
