Upgrading from SG-3100 to SG-5100 (or XG-7100)
-
Hello,
I currently have a SG-3100 system, and with everyone quarantined at home it seems to be a little stressed out. I am planning on upgrading to the SG-5100 (or XG-7100). I wanted to know if I could just back up my configuration on the SG-3100 and then restore it to the SG-5100 (or XG-7100), or do I have to recreate the configuration from scratch.
Thanks,
Lou -
Going to a 5100 should be OK, the interface assignments should be fairly straightforward.
Going to a 7100 may be trickier. Both the 3100 and a 7100 have a switch but the default ports are mapped quite a bit differently so it may take some more effort there. There is an option to preserve the switch config when importing but the default interfaces/VLANs are also important on that one.
Either way if you reach out to support someone can typically assist you with getting things moved over to the new model. That shouldn't be too difficult either way, just not trivial.

Can you describe the problem in more detail? We've put a good amount of traffic through 3100s at times so I'm just wondering what's not working for you.

@teamits Hi,
This is more of me convincing the queen that I need a larger firewall. I am seeing slowdowns with the number of people streaming from home (i.e. multiple people on VPNs, kids taking lessons through zoom, etc.). I have been upgrading everything gradually and the final component is the firewall. My network has over 150 items (computers, game consoles, cameras, IOT devices, phones, etc). I don't have many firewall rules, and the network is pretty simply laid out. Additionally I only allow known devices to the network through static DHCP assignments.I noticed after everyone being on the network at the same time the CPU jumped from <10% with peaks <20% to >20% with peaks >50%, so I figured jumping up a level would give me some better headroom.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

I would not really worry with CPU usage at >50% unless that is 1 core at close to 100%. If it was you might be seeing some evidence of that in terms of latency/packet loss.
What is your available WAN bandwidth there? Are you running any VPNs from the 3100 itself?Steve

@stephenw10 Thanks for the response. I am not running any VPNs from the 3100 directly, just multiple PCs on the network connecting to separate VPNs. I have gigabit service, which usually performs a speedtest result of 600 Mb to 880 Mb connected directly to the 3100.

Ah, well you would be toward the top of the 3100s performance if you are hitting those speeds in normal use, especially if you are running any packages.
If that is the case an SG-5100 would certainly be faster.Steve
