SR-IOV support on consumer grade motherboards.
-
Hi,
I'm planning to run pfSense on consumer grade PC (Intel G4560 + H110 motherboard) and have a question regarding 4-port NICs.
Is there any sense in buying I350-T4 over I340-T4 if SR-IOV is not supported by motherboard? I know I350 is generally recommended because of SR-IOV and some people try to run pfSense on VM, but I could only find few consumer grade motherboards that support SR-IOV, but all were for AMD CPUs...
Where I live I can get used I340 for ~25$ and I350 for ~50$ - this was supposed to be a budget build (I'm reusing equipment that I already have) so even 25$ count.
Cheers.

If you're not running virtualised I doubt you would be able to measure any difference between them.

but pay attention on what you buy, not all i340-t4 are supported you need to be sure it's not some chinese clone like this one

Thanks for your answers.
I will be buying used server card, so I'm pretty sure it will be genuine Dell or IBM card.
I will rephrase my question. :-)
Will I be able to use i350-T4 on consumer grade motherboard if manufacture doesn't specify that it supports SR-IOV? (The answer is probably not)

you can use it no problem even without sr-iov but

LOL... I've rephrased my question incorrectly. Sorry for that...
Will I be able to use i350-T4 in VM on consumer grade motherboard if manufacturer doesn't specify that it supports SR-IOV?

yes

It is almost clear for me know, but...
"If you're not running virtualised I doubt you would be able to measure any difference between them"
If my motherboard doesn't support SR-IOV will there be any difference between I350 and I340 when running them in VM?

no, no difference
