Installing 2.2 full onto usb 16gb with hdd raid 1 for file storage
-
I have a poweredge r210 ii that I want to install pfsense 2.2 on. I would like to do a full install on a usb flash 16gb and then use the two 500gb satas in RAID 1 for it to write to (log files etc.). a couple of questions; 1. is this possible, 2. are there instructions somewhere on how to do this (I have experience with linux but not BSD). If it is not possible I can install to the 500gb satas in RAID 1 but I am worried about reliability, I have had satas fail on me before, real pain. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I would like to do a full install on a usb flash 16gb …
Get the memstickk image or CD for your architecture and install it on a USB flash drive.
… and then use the two 500gb satas in RAID 1 for it to write to (log files etc.).
Point /var and /tmp to the RAID 1 device.

You'd be much better off just putting everything on the HDD RAID. The USB flash is more likely to fail, much slower, has no redundancy, and there's no benefit to putting it on the flash rather than the RAID.
