I found a wiki page documenting what LTE modems were known to work with pfsense, but I'm assuming the page hasn't been updated in a while because the modems listed were old models.

Does anyone know of a LTE modem that works well with pfsense? I'm looking at a Sierra Wireless EM7565 or EM7511, but I'm open to other at least cat12 modems (can be either miniPCI or M.2)

I know that OpenWRT (and its modem specific twin ROOTer) has good support for LTE modems, but I'd prefer to use pfsense if possible.

Does it have to be internal? I've worked with external ones and all they need is an Ethernet connection. Externals also give you more flexibility with positioning.

PfSense running on Qotom mini PC
i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 32 GB SSD & 4 Intel Gb Ethernet ports.
        UniFi AC-Lite access point

        I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

Thanks! Unless things have changed, it sounds like pfsense is not capable of using MBIM (ethernet-like LTE modem API) and relies on ppp which has pretty severe performance limitations.

On the other hand, that post is two years old - maybe things have changed.

Unfortunately there isn't (yet) ab MBIM or QMI driver for FreeBSD and hence pfSense.

I would expect the current Sierra devices to work if they present a known USB PID and u3g recogises it. But limited to AT connection interface.
