pfSense kernel panic as soon as it completes startup
-
However, I cannot find the crashdump. When I watch the console as it boots, it repairs the mirror, reports the file system is clean and then the process repeats. The reboot after the crash is automatic and so it continues.
I can boot in single user mode, but there is no dumpfile to be found.
How do I inspect what's happening and fix it?
thanks in advance

Serial console or video console?
UFS or ZFS?
If it's serial console, you can have your terminal program log the session and then the crash info should be in the buffer.
If it's a video console that's a bit trickier.
If it's UFS, you probably need to run
fsck -y /
a few times even though it says it's clean, it may still have things to fix.Honestly it's probably faster to reinstall and recover/restore your config than the troubleshoot if it's more complicated than that.

I'm going to try the serial console. It's a SUN X86 box, so it could be possible.

fsck -y /

Which files can I copy out from the drive to save the latest config. I added some dns redirects and a few other things since the last backup. So if I can, I'd like to get that off the drive first before reinstalling. Or can I reinstall without trashing the config?

/cf/conf/config.xml
And check out https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/automatically-restore-during-install.html

Doing fsck -y 4 times found more errors each time and after that, it all started up!! Thanks!
