Console report interface down while it is working (and FreeBSD reports "up")?
-
Hi Folks,
Encountered a weird situation - why would an interface be reported "down" at the pfSense console while it is actually working? Further, ifconfig shows the interface is "up."
This is an Azulle Tech Access Plus computer stick. It has a 100MB built-in Ethernet interface (ue0, as LAN). I added a USB Ethernet dongle (ue1, as WAN). Both interfaces work. It is a working pfSense router.
I would like to enable VLAN, and that is when I noticed something strange. ue1 is noted as "down" at the pfSense console. I also noted that, at the pfSense web interface, only interface ue0 is shown under VLAN. But at the shell, ifconfig does show the interface as "up."
What could be the reason? Thanks.

Hi,
I donโt want to frustrate, but USB NICs arenโt suitable for an NGFW...
They cause constant headaches and it is difficult to filter out the real problems with them
This is not a laptop that needs another eth. port (with USB or other), it is a firewall whose soul is the NIC and its driver... (under FreeBSD)

PfSense (FreeBSD) isn't famous for having need a power (iron) maschine to bring, but it's a computer stick, hmmm that's not enoughhttps://www.netgate.com/solutions/pfsense/sg-1100.html

Thanks. I know the USB NIC is going to cause questions,
This is not a production environment, but an experimental or learning environment. So, it is OK to go with something like USB NIC.
I am really puzzled by the inconsistency of reporting between pfSense and the underlying FreeBSD.

In terms of computing power for a pfSense router, a computer stick with 4GB memory is sufficient for a home / small office use.
I know a friend has used an Azulle Tech Access 3 computer stick for a small office (5~6 people). The Internet speed is 300M. It is quite stable, running for months without any issue. Access 3 has an Intel N3450 CPU and 4GB RAM. It has one built-in Realtek Ethernet port. So, VLAN enabled. And compile and load the if_re.ko module to prevent a high traffic death that often happens with Realtek adapters.

As you think, if that's right for you....
I only project our experience forward...+++edit:
