Atom D525 is old. I would not buy that new today.

What is your WAN bandwidth? Do you want to use VPNs?

The D525 will pass 500-600Mbps with just firewall & NAT. So if you need full gigabit between internal interfaces you need something more powerful.

With what CPU? Though any CPU you could fit there will pass 100Mbps easily and will likely pass 1Gbps with plenty left for packages.
However at that cost consider for exmaple: https://www.netgate.com/solutions/pfsense/sg-3100.html

It depends what you want to achieve. For educational purposes building your own device is a good choice. In terms of supporting the development of the project purchasing a device from us is better.
