      Hello,

I am looking for a SFP card that is able to autonegotiate to 100base-TX, since my ISP (P2P FTTH) only has a 100-base-TX module on the other end. I plan to use this module (for future proofing) https://www.fs.com/products/75343.html.

I already looked at the Chelsio T520-CR with this driver: https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=cxgbe&sektion=4&manpath=freebsd-release-ports

and the Intel Ethernet Controller X710-BM2 with this driver: https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=ixl&sektion=4&manpath=freebsd-release-ports

I am unable to see the supported speeds on those cards. How can I find out if these cards support autonegotiating 100base-tx speeds? Does someone have those cards and can check if they can set the interface speed manually to 100base-tx?

      Any help would be appreciated.
      Thanks

        Hi,

What you are doing or planning to do is exhausting this: “To shoot out of cannon into sparrows”

The NICs you list are all 10Gig capable and unnecessary for a 100baseTX connection and are expensive.

Choose a used but, branded NIC card, for example: Dell I350-F4 and insert an Intel-compatible SFP module.

Pay attention to the distance and the parameters of the fiberglass - and the parameters of the module on the other end (ISP)

The speed depends on the module (and/or PHY on the NIC), use 100BASE SFP or dual rate module 100/1000.

        https://www.fs.com/de-en/c/100base-sfp-1668
        dual rate - nowadays - it only exists in 1Gig / 10Gig (SFP / SFP +)

What is remains.... to be pay attention is that the SFP NIC be compatible with the uploaded code of the SFP module, but we have already clarified this INTEL (since the NIC is also Intel PHY based)

          Thanks for the reply.

It is hard for me to find any used brand NICs, they seem to be more expensive than 10 gig options here in europe.

I searched for some time and found this card, witch should/could work: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-E1G42EF-SFP-82576-1Gbps-Gigabit-EF-Dual-Port-Fiber-Network-Server-Adapter/223110474391

This is the tecnology my ISP uses:
          SFP Type: BiDi
          Architecture: point to point (P2P)
          Wavelength TX: 1310 nm
          Wavelength RX: 1550 nm
Carrying capacity: 10 or 20 Km
          Standard ETH: 100BASE-BX (FE)

Their router I want to replace came witch this SFP Module https://www.fs.com/products/13055.html

Use a switch to connect the two. Make a two-port blank VLAN and connect the SFP to one port and the 100BaseTX to the other.

I am also European 😉 ....if you are looking for Intel I350-F4 you have to be very careful, - "you know" because ...... the lot of fake Chinese stuff. (on eBay, etc.)
We have a well-established and reliable Chinese supplier on the theme.
(tested on pfSense - FreeBSD and work seamlessly (SFP NICs) for years, - Very good prices and original I350 PHY Intel chip)

Now, I share this with you.... -we tested those on pfSense installations,...with complete success.

What @derelict suggests is also a solution, but I would simplify it by offering two solutions:

              • SFP to SFP media converter (cheap version, but knows everything format SM, MM, CWDM, BiDi and speeds so everything), - it can also be called a format converter.
                https://www.ad-net.com.tw/product/sfp-to-sfp-media-converter/

-The following may be the more professional solution in many places we use this and this manufacturer (a little more expensive solution)

SFP to Eth. media converter, -handles almost all SFP (welcome the custom code available by munufacturer) modules and speeds in the world (very stable enterprise quality):
              https://www.ctcu.com/en/fiber-series/simple-media-converter/fmc-1001s.html

              Cheap version: f.e.: https://www.amazon.com/6COM-Converter-100Base-TX-100Base-FX-Transceiver/dp/B077VJRGLQ

I see you like FS_Com we are contract partners, but unfortunately they don't have a 100Base media converter on offer, they only have such unit that handles 1Gig modules.

              BTW:
if you use a media converter or choose, you don't need an SFP NIC, these stuff are usually "transparent" to everything (protokols and standards), so the unmanaged version is more than enough....

              Additional info:

I usually find a lot of good stuff here in the EU,...
the stock is constantly changing, there is currently no branded SFP NIC, but keep an eye out, because it may be in stock tomorrow...
(this in case you would still choose the SFP NIC solution)

Great ideas, I think I will get a SFP to ethernet media converter.
