I am trying to enable traffic shaping on the ix ports of my SG-5100 via the Multiple Lan/Wan wizard, but when trying to select 2 WAN interfaces (igb0 and ix0) and 1 LAN (igb1) interface, the message that I get back is:

The specified number of connections is greater than the number of ALTQ-capable assigned interfaces!

Both the WAN interfaces are part of a routing group with igb0 at Tier 1 and ix0 as Tier 2. I checked to make sure that the ix ports are ALTQ capable, But I cant figure out why I am getting this message.

      Any help would be appreciated.

You need the 2.5 snapshots if you want to use altq with ix interfaces, it has been disabled in previous versions for years due to instability.

Does the XG-7100 support altq on the eth1-8 interfaces? If not, which Netgate devices do?

I have a 5100 that I was planning on Traffic Shaping the ix interfaces. Currently have PIRQ working ok on the LAN. But I want to have separate networks off ix0 and ix1 and still guarantee VOIP quality. Looks like my only option at this point is to use Limiters.

I would not mind upgrading to the XG-7100 if it could accomplish altq across all the interfaces, though I really like the passive cooling of the 5100.

Also, noob question. Couldn't all the traffic shaping be done on the WAN interface since that is where the real bottleneck is?

@rj I would suggest you look into fq-codel with that 5100, but you would need to stay on 2.4.5 as limiters on the wan interface is currently broken on 2.5.

Shaping happens when packets leave an interface. (https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/trafficshaper/index.html#traffic-shaping-basics)

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.
